What is Broken Internal Links?

Broken internal links are links from one page on a site to another page on the same site that return a non-200 status code — typically 404 (Not Found) or 500 (Server Error). When a crawler follows a broken internal link, it abandons the path and does not credit the destination with any crawl activity. This reduces the crawl depth and frequency of pages connected to that dead end, effectively making them harder to discover and rank.

Why it matters

Every broken internal link is a lost opportunity to pass ranking authority to another page. On sites with large numbers of broken links, the cumulative effect is a fragmented internal link graph where PageRank pools at pages with inbound links but cannot flow outward. Google's quality assessors also flag sites with significant broken link counts as indicators of poor maintenance.

How to fix

1. 1.Run a monthly full-site crawl and export all internal 4xx link sources for batch repair.
2. 2.Update links pointing to permanently removed pages, or set up appropriate 301 redirects to closely related content.
3. 3.Audit navigation menus, footers, and CMS sidebar widgets — these contain the most persistent broken links because they're rarely reviewed.
4. 4.Where content is permanently removed with no suitable replacement, simply remove the link rather than redirecting to a mismatched page.
