Canonical Issues Leaderboard

This leaderboard ranks audited websites by the number of pages with canonical tag problems — including missing canonicals, self-contradictory declarations, and canonicals pointing to incorrect URLs. Sites at the top have the most canonical issues detected.

Canonical issues occur when pages are missing, conflicting, or misdirecting the canonical tag used to declare the authoritative URL.

This leaderboard ranks audited sites by the number of canonical issues pages found in their latest public audit. Based on 1762 audited sites with canonical issues detected.

What is Canonical Issues?

Canonical tags declare which URL is the authoritative version of a page when duplicates or near-duplicates exist. Missing, self-contradictory, or misdirected canonical tags cause search engines to index the wrong URL, split link equity across duplicate versions, or trigger unexpected deindexation during algorithm updates. This is one of the most common causes of ranking loss after site migrations.

Why it matters

Canonical misconfiguration is one of the leading causes of ranking fluctuations after site migrations and one of the hardest issues to diagnose post-hoc. When Google canonicalizes to a different URL than intended, link equity and crawl attention are redirected away from the correct page — a loss that can persist for weeks after the fix is deployed.

How to fix

  1. 1.Ensure every published page has a self-referencing canonical tag pointing to its single preferred URL.
  2. 2.Audit all canonical tags pointing to external domains or unexpected paths — these are rarely intentional and are often introduced by CDNs or CMS plugins.
  3. 3.For duplicate products accessible via multiple URL paths, canonicalize to the version with the highest inbound link count.
  4. 4.Verify your XML sitemap only includes canonical URLs, not their parameter or pagination variants.

Common Questions

What happens if a page has no canonical tag?

Without a canonical, search engines choose which URL to index on their own — often picking a parameter variant or an HTTP version instead of your preferred URL. This splits link equity across duplicates.

Can a wrong canonical cause a page to disappear from search?

Yes. A canonical pointing to a different URL tells Google to index that URL instead. If the destination is a redirect or a noindex page, the original URL can be deindexed entirely.

Should every page have a self-referencing canonical?

Yes. Every published page should include a canonical pointing to its own preferred URL, even if no duplicate exists. This prevents crawlers from creating accidental duplicates via URL parameters.
