Redirect Chains Leaderboard

This leaderboard ranks audited websites by the number of URLs found in redirect chains — sequences where a URL redirects through two or more intermediate URLs before reaching the final destination. Sites at the top have the most chained redirects detected in their latest audit.

Redirect chains are URLs that pass through two or more hops before reaching the final destination, degrading crawl efficiency and link equity.

This leaderboard ranks audited sites by the number of redirect chains pages found in their latest public audit. Based on 330 audited sites with redirect chains detected.

What is Redirect Chains?

A redirect chain occurs when a URL redirects through two or more hops before reaching its final destination. Each additional hop adds latency for users and consumes crawl budget. Crawlers may abandon chains that exceed a depth threshold, leaving the destination URL without crawl credit from the original address. Chains are most common on sites that have undergone multiple URL structure changes, protocol migrations, or layered tracking redirects.

Why it matters

Redirect chains longer than 2–3 hops can cause Googlebot to stop following the path entirely — meaning the destination page receives no ranking signals from the original URL. Even when crawlers do follow the full chain, PageRank and link equity degrade at each hop. Users experience measurable latency on every chain traversal, which affects Core Web Vitals and session retention.

How to fix

  1. 1.Audit all redirect paths using a crawler and collapse multi-hop chains into a single direct 301 pointing to the final canonical URL.
  2. 2.Update all internal links to point directly to final destination URLs, not intermediate hops.
  3. 3.After collapsing a chain, verify the change with a crawler run before removing any intermediate redirect entries.
  4. 4.Add a workflow rule or CI check to flag any new redirect that would extend an existing chain.

Common Questions

How many redirects is too many?

More than one intermediate hop is considered a chain. Googlebot may abandon chains exceeding 3–5 hops, leaving the destination page without crawl credit from the originating URL.

Do redirect chains lose PageRank?

Yes. Link equity degrades at each redirect hop, even with 301 redirects. Collapsing a chain into a single direct 301 preserves the maximum amount of ranking signal for the destination page.

How do I find and fix redirect chains?

Run a full-site crawl to export all redirect paths. For each chain, update the source URL to point directly to the final destination. Then update internal links to avoid re-creating the chain.
