What is Thin Content?

Thin content refers to pages with fewer than 400 words that lack the depth needed for search engines to confidently match them to relevant queries. These pages are frequently filtered out of competitive rankings in favor of more comprehensive results covering the same topic. Common culprits include auto-generated category pages, stub blog posts, and product pages using manufacturer copy verbatim.

Why it matters

Google's quality systems explicitly demote thin pages. A page that falls below the content threshold is often omitted from competitive keyword rankings regardless of its backlink profile or domain authority. Sites with a high proportion of thin pages face site-wide quality signals that can suppress even their well-written content.

How to fix

1. 1.Expand product and category pages with unique descriptions, buyer guides, FAQs, or comparison sections.
2. 2.Consolidate multiple thin pages covering the same topic into one comprehensive, authoritative page and 301 redirect the rest.
3. 3.For auto-generated pages with no unique value, apply noindex or a canonical pointing to the parent category.
4. 4.Prioritize expansion on thin pages that already receive impressions in Google Search Console — they are partially visible and respond fastest to improvement.
